Date set for re-entry to Pike River

The New Zealand Government have announced a re-entry date for the Pike River mine. New Zealand Pike River Re-entry Minister Andrew Little says that the 30metre seal will be broken on May 3rd and re-entry wou ld begin from that point. The event will be marked on New Zealand’s West Coast attended by Minister Little, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Deputy Prime Minister Winston Peters. Little said there had already been a huge amount of work already done to prepare for re-entry. “This has included preparing bridges for heavy loads, installing a nitrogen plant, upgrading the power supply, laying many kilometres of piping for the nitrogen, drilling more boreholes, installing monitoring equipment, and purging and ventilating the drift.” Little said “The science and engineering that goes into this project, it’s pretty impressive. Once the 30-metre seal is breached, then the re-entry and recovery operation can begin. All things going to the current plan, the [ Pike R...

Completed Roy Hill Rail Bridge Delivers Safety Outcomes for Port Hedland

Today Roy Hill welcomed the Minister for Transport, the Minister for Environment and MP for the Pilbara, Kevin Michel MLA to open the completed Roy Hill Rail Bridge . The Roy Hill funded bridge is a $18.66 million new single span rail bridge carrying the Great Northern Highway over the Roy Hill rail line, leading into Port Hedland’s port. The new bridge replaces an existing level crossing, enabling the free movement of traffic over the rail line, and removes the potential for a railroad accident at the intersection. Main Roads WA have overseen the design, procurement process and construction of the project, and now the project is complete, will oversee the future operations and ongoing maintenance of the bridge. Main Roads WA appointed WA business Georgiou Pty Ltd the contract to construct the bridge, and local Pilbara Aboriginal business Gebro Contracting as the project site supervisor, with the construction of the bridge generating 65 ...

New mobile cooling tower

SPONSORED Aggreko the global provider of modular, mobile power, has launched a new proposition – the Global Cooling Tower (GT) Series.  The GT Series, Aggreko’s first mobile and modular cooling tower which can be deployed on a global level, aims to support and increase efficiency for customers operating in an increasingly decentralised and digitalised energy market. Aggreko has already installed GT Series products at customer sites across the world from Japan to North America.  Engineered by Aggreko, the GT Series’ unique modular design aims to reduce customer energy costs and save space on industrial sites. Ground control guidance for mining operations

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) is seeking public comment on a suite of guidance materials developed for ground control for WA mining operations . The department has prepared a  draft code of practice for ground control for Western Australian mining operations . This code of practice will assist those operating a mine to consider the geotechnical aspects for the safe design, construction, operation and closure of the mine workings for which they are responsible so they may meet their legislative obligations for occupational safety and health under the  Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994  and the Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations 1995. In addition, the department has developed a  draft ground control management in WA mining operations guideline . It is designed for those who have control of a mine (e.g. employer, Registered Manager, Quarry Manager, Underground Mine Manager), or have operational functions ...

North Goonyella Mine Fire:a tale of deception

OPINION: There’s an old saying “What a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive.” That saying might just apply to one of the world’s largest coal miners who, in cahoots with the Queensland Government, may have sought to cover up highly market sensitive information on the North Goonyella Mine Fire . This week Peabody Energy have been accused of one of the hugest porkies in relation to the North Goonyella Mine Fire. On Tuesday, Mathew Stevens from the Australian Financial Review (AFR) put a huge sword through the belly of Peabody Energy in his feature article ” Peabody admits that smoke really did mean fire.” Mathew highlighted that Peabody finally went to market three days after pictures had been posted publicly of black smoke billowing from the North Goonyella mine. This resulted in a massive drop in the Peabody Energy share price. Queensland Government Cover Up So you say, what about the Queensland Government’s role in the debacle? Well they too didn’t...
