Industry leaders talk mining health & safety

Mining industry leaders across Western Australia have gathered to talk mining health & safety. Mines and Petroleum Minister Bill Johnston officially opened the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety’s fourth annual Registered Managers Forum in Perth on Friday. The event brings together mining managers, from across the State, to focus on a range of mining health safety topics.

Minister Johnston said on opening of the meeting that “Workplace safety is one of the McGowan Government’s number one priorities, and there are always improvements to be made.   Today’s event is an opportunity for delegates and government to work together to improve safety across Western Australia’s mining industry.”  He added that “Workers, supervisors, managers and inspectors all have a role to play in preventing injuries and fatalities on site.”

The outcomes from the 2017 meeting included:
  • Considering establishing protocols for coordination of activities between principals, contractors and subcontractors prior to the commencement of work;
  • Rethinking the approach to mining health and safety criteria in contract evaluation processes;
  • Developing feedback loops that feed lessons learnt on contractor performance to the contractor selection process for future projects.
While the meeting aims to continue the focus of the Department’s Towards 2020 program,  the recent fatality at Paraburdoo mine last week may dominate proceeding and seek to increase focus on management/compliance of contractors in mining  health safety across Western Australia.
Queensland is also hosting its’ annual Queensland Mining Industry Health & Safety Conference commencing on Sunday 19th August 2018, with more than 700 delegates expected to attend a comprehensive mine health safety program covering a range of topics. The conference will also host the mining health safety innovation awards where finalists will vie for the Queensland Mining Industry Innovation Award Trophy.

Whistleblower protection laws passed

New laws requiring organisations to protect whistleblowers and implement whistleblowing policies have passed through the Australian Government and is expected to come into effect on 1 July. On 19 February 2019, the House of Representatives passed the Treasury Laws Amendment (Enhancing Whistleblower Protections) Bill 2018 . The Bill is due to receive royal assent and commence operation 1st July 2019. Professor A J Brown, Professor of Public Policy and Law at Griffith University, has highlighted a few key aspects of changes. Professor Brown said that legal protections do not only kick in after a whistleblower starts to experience reprisals.  Only taking action on reprisals after the event is like giving a band-aid to an amputee – by the time compensation rights are triggered, it is usually too late.
