Austmine Networking in Brisbane

Austmine’s Brisbane End of Year Networking event provides an opportunity to celebrate with industry colleagues and the Austmine team at the end of a fantastic year for our industry. The event will be held on Monday 26th November 2018 at the Queensland Cricketer’s Club.

Together mining and METS companies have reached new heights in 2018 and are ushering in an exciting digital age driven by new technologies, innovative thinking and collaborative problem-solving. This collective strength and support has enabled Austmine to explore new frontiers for our members throughout the year, such as the creation of international initiatives and projects, facilitation of key industry workshops, increased networking opportunities and greater influence to advocate for our world-leading METS sector.

The event will facilitate new connections between METS and miners in attendance and will include short presentations and networking drinks and canapes.

Ground control guidance for mining operations

The Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety (DMIRS) is seeking public comment on a suite of guidance materials developed for ground control for WA mining operations . The department has prepared a draft code of practice for ground control for Western Australian mining operations . This code of practice will assist those operating a mine to consider the geotechnical aspects for the safe design, construction, operation and closure of the mine workings for which they are responsible so they may meet their legislative obligations for occupational safety and health under the Mines Safety and Inspection Act 1994 and the Mines Safety and Inspection Regulations 1995. In addition, the department has developed a draft ground control management in WA mining operations guideline . Whistleblower protection laws passed

New laws requiring organisations to protect whistleblowers and implement whistleblowing policies have passed through the Australian Government and is expected to come into effect on 1 July. On 19 February 2019, the House of Representatives passed the Treasury Laws Amendment (Enhancing Whistleblower Protections) Bill 2018 . The Bill is due to receive royal assent and commence operation 1st July 2019. Professor A J Brown, Professor of Public Policy and Law at Griffith University, has highlighted a few key aspects of changes. Professor Brown said that legal protections do not only kick in after a whistleblower starts to experience reprisals. Only taking action on reprisals after the event is like giving a band-aid to an amputee – by the time compensation rights are triggered, it is usually too late. All public and large proprietary companies are required to have whistleblowing policies which spell out how they will “support and protect” those who speak up...
